Culture-Based Tourism

Culture-Based Tourism at the Kenyan Coast

The Kenyan Coastal city is home to a variety of cultural attractions. There are various destinations that will indeed not miss the short list of a tourist who is fascinated by cultural attractions. Mombasa town in the coastal city has a history of invasion by the Portuguese who wanted to protect their trade routes to India. In this City stands the old Fort Jesus conveniently located on the old town of Mombasa. It got its name from the Portuguese who sailed under the flag of the order of Christ thus Fort Jesus. The architecture of Fort Jesus in form of a cross that will surely fascinate together with it's old weapons of war, the utensils used at the time, the marble used in construction and much more.

Still, in Mombasa town you will find the Mombasa cultural centre that was established to promote the Swahili cultural way of life. At the Mombasa cultural centre you will be intrigued by the stories of the Swahili culture, their beliefs and taboos they hey practice up to today. You will get a rare chance to understand why and how the coastal inhabitants, mostly the Swahili lead their lifestyle totally different from any other part of the country. From the way they talk, arrange their cultural festivals and how they conduct their weddings, funerals, circumcision or even the responsibilities of each member of the community towards the community.

On your way to Malindi town, you will pass through Gede Ruins. Gede or Gedi means precious. It is an old town once of the Arabs. The ruins at Gede have been excavated and among the ruins are the palace, the great mosque, the pillar tomb and also there is a museum harboring a collection of very old artifacts used by the Arabs in the 14th and 15th centauries.

Just a few kilometers from Mombasa city you will come across the Ngomomgo villages. Here lies a sample of the ten Kenyan tribes. They are actually built homesteads designed like those in the rural areas. In each homestead you will find people representing a particular tribe e.g. the Maasai or the Agikuyu community. They represent each of a particular tribe in Kenya. Cultural aspects of a tribe will be displayed e.g. dressing style, their economic activities like agriculture, cultural events and ceremonies and much more will be at your disposal. Visitors are allowed to engage in some of this activities e.g. dancing and singing. This is most ideal for visitors who wish to experience the whole Kenyan Fabric in a traditional setting in one collection instead of travelling the whole country, community by community. Just before you indulge yourself on the beach and in the ocean, sample what a small village in Jadini has to offer. You will be served with traditional African dishes prepared and served in the African fashion. You may also stand and enjoy a real curving in motion in the carving workshop as well as purchase the finished carvings. Kenya, land of diversity!
